Washington (USA), 24 April (LaPresse) – Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied that the United States is considering lifting sanctions on the Russian energy sector as part of negotiations on Ukraine. ‘It is unequivocally false,’ Rubio wrote in a post on X. The news was first reported by Politico, which said that the White House was considering lifting sanctions on Russian energy resources in Europe and on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Trump had sanctioned the pipeline during his first term. The Biden administration then lifted these sanctions but reintroduced them after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began. Politico cited US envoy Steve Witkoff as the main proponent of easing US sanctions on Moscow. Witkoff has met face-to-face with Putin at least three times and has a new meeting scheduled for 25 April.
