Washington (USA), April 24 (LaPresse) – The United States has “direct contact” with China “every day” regarding trade negotiations, President Donald Trump said while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office. According to the Financial Times, citing informed sources, Trump plans to spare automakers from some of the heaviest tariffs by exempting auto parts imported from China—tariffs originally imposed over fentanyl—as well as duties on steel and aluminum. The exemptions would leave in place Trump’s 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars. A separate 25% tax on components, set to take effect on May 3, would also remain. According to the FT, these concessions would mark an early victory for the auto industry and another retreat by Trump from his more aggressive tariff policies, amid concerns that such measures could raise the prices of American cars, disrupt supply chains, and result in job losses.
