Turin, April 2 (LaPresse) – Russian mediator Kirill Dmitriev is expected to visit Washington this week to meet with Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, for talks aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries as they seek to end the war in Ukraine.
This visit will mark the first time since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 that a senior Russian official has traveled to Washington for talks. Dmitriev is a close advisor to Putin, and in February, he traveled with senior Russian officials to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to begin discussions on a potential agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
Dmitriev has also worked with Witkoff to secure the release of American teacher Marc Fogel from Russia. A Harvard graduate, Dmitriev is the CEO of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund RDIF and has been sanctioned by the Biden administration, along with Putin, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In 2022, the U.S. Treasury Department stated that "Putin and his inner circle have long relied on RDIF and Dmitriev to raise funds abroad, including in the United States."
