Milan, April 2 (LaPresse) – The White House is preparing an estimate of how much it would cost the U.S. federal government to control Greenland as a territory. This was revealed to The Washington Post by three sources familiar with the matter.
This represents the most concrete effort so far to turn former President Donald Trump's desire to acquire the island—currently under Danish control—into a viable policy. White House budget office staff have been assessing the potential costs of maintaining Greenland if it were acquired, including the expenses of providing government services to its 58,000 residents.
Additionally, officials are estimating potential revenue for the U.S. Treasury from Greenland’s natural resources. One option under consideration is offering the Greenlandic government a more favorable deal than Denmark, which currently subsidizes services on the island at around $600 million per year.
