Strasbourg (France), Apr 1 (LaPresse) – ‘Our immediate response (to US duties) is unity and determination. I have already been in contact with our heads of state and government on the next steps. Today we have the parliamentary debate. And we will carefully evaluate tomorrow's announcements to calibrate our response. Our goal is a negotiated solution'. This was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in her address to the plenary on the conclusions of the March European Council. ‘But of course, if necessary, we will protect our interests, our people and our companies. I want to be very clear about the purpose of our response. We think that this confrontation is in nobody's interest. The flow of goods and services between us is almost in balance,' he adds. 'We are willing to work on the trade balance of goods and services. This is the largest and most prosperous trade relationship in the world. We would all be better off if we could find a constructive solution. At the same time, it must also be clear: Europe did not start this fight. We do not necessarily want to retaliate, but we have a strong plan to retaliate if necessary,' he reports.
