Paris, 1 April (LaPresse) – It is ‘a political decision to prevent me from standing in the presidential elections’. These are the first words of the president of the National Rally, Marine Le Pen, commenting on the decision of the Paris court which found her and eight other MEPs guilty of misappropriation of public funds. ‘The rule of law has been completely violated because it prevents an effective remedy, which is a right guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights,’ continued Ms Le Pen, who was sentenced to four years in prison, two of which are suspended, with the obligation to wear an electronic tag, a fine of 100,000 euros and five years of ineligibility. Mr Le Pen will therefore not be able to stand in any election, and the possibility of standing in the presidential election scheduled for May 2027 is also receding. I will appeal ‘as soon as possible’, it is ‘a dark day’ for ‘all those who are committed to democracy and the rule of law’.
