Of course, we will defend our interests: we can respond, but our interest is to have a negotiation that leads to good results for both sides. The distinguishing feature of Europe is that we are a predictable and reliable partner. That is why, at a global level, there is interest in creating new partnerships with the EU: diversifying our markets is just as important as strengthening our competitiveness." This was stated by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
"Europe," she added, "has always been a project of peace and will always be a project of peace. But we must be strong to maintain peace. The Readiness 2030 plan covers a broader scope, addressing various dimensions of security and the tools to maintain peace. This is the main approach."
Regarding whether it is a problem for the EU that Meloni has a good relationship with Trump and shares similar positions on certain issues, von der Leyen responded: "On the contrary, I think this is very positive. I know Giorgia Meloni as a strong and passionate leader, with a very important role at the European level, and it is positive that she has a direct relationship. The more ties there are between the two sides of the Atlantic, the better."
