Nuuk (Greenland), Mar 12 (LaPresse/AP) – ‘I think this is a historic result in the political history of Greenland’. This is how the leader of the Greenlandic centre-right party Demokraatit, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, 33, commented on his political formation's victory in the parliamentary elections that took place yesterday. According to Greenlandic broadcaster KNR TV, Demokraatit won with around 30% of the vote, compared to 9% in the elections four years ago, while in second place came the Naleraq party with almost 25%, compared to just under 12% in 2021. Demokraatit's victory came as a surprise because predictions had predicted a victory for outgoing Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede's party, Inuit Ataqatigiit, i.e. ‘United Inuit’, followed by Siumut, two parties that have dominated Greenlandic politics in recent years. Nielsen also appeared surprised by his party's results: some photos show him flashing a huge smile and applauding at the election party. The Danish Broadcasting Corporation DR reported that Nielsen stated that his party will approach all other parties to negotiate the future political course in Greenland: ‘We did not expect the elections to have this outcome,’ he said, ‘we are very happy’.
