Milan, 12 Feb (LaPresse) – Konstantinos Tasoulas is the new president of Greece. Candidate of the conservative ruling New Democracy party was elected in Parliament, where he obtained 160 votes out of 300 seats. 276 MPs participated in the vote, while 24 were absent, including all 11 New Left MPs. Local media reported this. Tasoulas is former speaker of the House and New Democracy MP. Kathemerini explains that in the fourth and final round of voting the threshold for election was a simple majority of 151 votes. With New Democracy holding 156 seats, Tasoulas' victory was practically guaranteed. Tasos Giannitsis, supported by the main opposition party Pasok, received 34 votes, while Louka Katseli, the candidate supported by Syriza and New Left, received 29 votes. Kostas Kyriakou, candidate of the far-right Niki party, received 14 votes. Tasoulas will succeed Katerina Sakellaropoulou, whose term expires on 13 March. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for the same day.
