Goma (Congo), Feb. 3 (LaPresse) – Last week's fighting between Congo's government forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in the main eastern city of Goma has resulted in at least 900 deaths, according to the United Nations health agency, which has increased the previously reported death toll from 773.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that at least 900 bodies were recovered from the streets of Goma last Friday after five days of fighting, during which M23 rebels took control of the city.

The WHO also reported nearly 2,900 injuries from the clashes.

The M23 rebels are backed by approximately 4,000 troops from neighboring Rwanda, according to UN experts.
