Turin, January 28 (LaPresse) – The "Doomsday Clock" is closer than ever to midnight, symbolizing that the world is approaching a global catastrophe. The new time, 89 seconds to midnight, was announced today by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a publication addressing global security and public policy issues. The hands have moved one second closer compared to two years ago, due to worsening threats to humanity, ranging from nuclear war to climate change, pandemics, and artificial intelligence. As a metaphor for the dangers threatening humanity, the clock is updated based on the perception of how close humans are to destroying the world, with midnight symbolizing catastrophe. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which created the clock, first launched the initiative in response to the threat of nuclear war in the 1940s. In 2023, the clock was moved forward to 90 seconds to midnight due to the "increasing dangers of the war in Ukraine." Experts state that the shift from 90 to 89 seconds to midnight should serve as a "warning to all world leaders."
