Beijing (China), Jan. 24 (LaPresse/AP) – The rush for Lunar New Year travel in China is in full swing, marking the peak of the 40-day annual mass migration, the largest in the world. The New Year itself, which marks the beginning of the Year of the Snake in the 12-month lunar calendar, falls on Wednesday, January 29, while Tuesday, January 28, is reserved for family gatherings and traditional fireworks displays.

Many began traveling on January 14, with the migration expected to reach its climax over the weekend. A total of 9 billion trips are anticipated, mostly by car. Train journeys are expected to exceed 510 million, while another 90 million will travel by plane.

Traditionally, the festival is considered a time for family reunions, and for many, it is the only opportunity to see parents and children.
