USA: Trump requests suspension of sentencing in Stormy Daniels case

Washington (USA), Jan. 6 (LaPresse) – Donald Trump's lawyers have asked Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan to suspend the sentencing against the U.S. president-elect in the Stormy Daniels case. The sentencing is scheduled for this week.

The former president’s attorneys plan to appeal Judge Merchan’s decision last week to set January 10—ten days before Trump’s inauguration—as the date for announcing the sentence. However, the judge has indicated that he does not intend to impose a custodial sentence on Trump, who was found guilty by a jury in May of falsifying business records to cover up a $130,000 payment to Daniels. This payment was made to prevent her from disclosing details of a past sexual encounter with Trump ahead of the 2016 election.

Trump’s lawyers had unsuccessfully requested the case’s dismissal, citing the Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity and the businessman’s reelection.
