Turin, 12 June (LaPresse) – ‘Perhaps Italy will qualify if there’s a 64-team tournament. Or who knows, maybe if there were 208…’. FIFA President Gianni Infantino joked about Italy’s absence from the World Cup – their third consecutive one – whilst speaking to ‘Cazè TV’. The head of world football returned to the possibility of further expanding the number of national teams participating in the World Cup ahead of future editions. ‘First we need to see how this 48-team World Cup goes; it’s already a very important event,’ he explained. ‘We’ve discussed a 64-team World Cup, with greater participation from all over the world. It’s already been discussed in the FIFA Council, but we’ll make the most of this 48-team edition.’
