Rome, 17 Apr. (LaPresse) – Flavio Cobolli defeated Czech player Vit Kopriva 6-3, 6-2 to reach his first semi-final at the ‘BMW Open by Bitpanda’, the ATP 500 tournament in Munich. The Roman, currently ranked 16th, is chasing his second title of the season following his victory at the ATP 500 in Acapulco, which propelled him to 13th place, his highest ranking to date. The Italian has won 13 of the 21 matches he has played on the ATP Tour in 2026, and 18 of his last 24 on clay, the surface on which he celebrated his first two ATP titles in 2025, in Bucharest and Hamburg. The 28-year-old Kopriva, ranked 78th in the world, reached his career-high ranking of 60th last March following his semi-final appearance at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro, his second in the main circuit. In his first appearance in Munich, the Czech secured his tenth main-draw victory of the season against Luciano Darderi in the round of 16: he had never achieved so many in a single year before. Against Cobolli, he played his fifth ATP quarter-final (with a 2-3 record), but failed to secure his second career victory over a Top 20 player. His only such win to date came against the then world number 10 Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the ATP 250 in Gstaad in 2021, his first-ever ATP tournament, where he went on to reach the semi-finals.
