International: Silvio Baldini named Italy manager for June friendlies

Rome, 10 April (LaPresse) – The national team will return to action in just under two months, facing Luxembourg on Wednesday 3 June (8.45 pm) at the Stade de Luxembourg, and taking to the pitch on Sunday 7 June (8.45 pm) at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, on the island of Crete, for another friendly against Greece. Leading the Azzurri for these two matches will be Under-21 national team coach Silvio Baldini, who will be assisted by his staff. The Azzurri have won eight of the nine matches played against Luxembourg: the only draw (1-1, goals from Marchisio and Chanot) came in the friendly played on 4 June 2014 in Perugia, the final warm-up match before the national team’s departure for the World Cup in Brazil. There have been 11 previous encounters with Greece (the first of which took place in Crete), with a record of seven wins for the Azzurri, three draws and just one defeat. The most recent meeting between the two sides dates back to 12 October 2019, when, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome in front of 56,000 spectators, Italy won 2-0 with goals from Jorginho and Bernardeschi, securing automatic qualification for the European Championship with three matches to spare. In September, the national team will begin its campaign in the fifth edition of the UEFA Nations League. Placed in Group 1 of League A alongside France, Belgium and Turkey, Italy will make its debut in the tournament on Friday 25 September, hosting the Red Devils, before travelling to Turkey on Monday 28 September and to France on Friday 2 October. The first international break of the season, which will see Italy take to the pitch four times over the course of eleven days, will conclude on Monday 5 October with the home match against Turkey. In November, the Azzurri will host France and then travel to Belgium for the final group match.
