Australian Open: Kyrgios gives up wild card for singles tournament

Turin, 9 Jan. (LaPresse) – Nick Kyrgios has given up his wild card for a place in the men's singles draw at the Australian Open. ‘After discussing it with Tennis Australia, I have decided to focus solely on doubles for this edition of the Australian Open,’ he said. "I am in good shape and back on court, but five sets is something else and I am not yet ready to compete at that level. This tournament means everything to me, but I prefer to give my place to someone who is able to enjoy the moment. Now it's a matter of continuing to build so that I can come back next year energised and ready to compete." Kyrgios returned to the court a few days ago in Brisbane, defeated in the first round by Aleksandar Kovacevic, in what was his seventh match in three years after repeated stops due to wrist reconstruction and two knee operations.
