Basketball, Banchi: "Highest moment of my career, aim is World Cup qualification"

Rome, Oct. 3 (LaPresse) – "I do not hide my excitement and gratitude for being chosen for this role, which I value greatly. I got close to basketball at a very young age. From early on, I chose role models, and the national team coach has always been a reference, from the times of Primo to Pozzecco, whose legacy I now inherit. All these coaches have inspired me and will continue to inspire me on this path," said Luca Banchi, the new head coach of the Italian national basketball team, at the presentation in the Salone d’Onore of Coni.

"This is the highest moment of my career. I give value to my role and my mission to build an identity and a recognizable style on the court and beyond. I believe in simple, essential aspects linked to the sense of belonging and participation; on these foundations, we must build our project. We will deal with a new generation of extremely talented players, and the national team will have a role in their growth. The team also has the task of promoting technical knowledge nationwide, thanks not only to results but also through organization and being a point of reference for everyone. I hope to be worthy of this role and to pursue my dreams," Banchi continued.

"We will try to be as inclusive as possible. Our goal is World Cup qualification, which will involve facing formidable opponents, fresh from the recent European Championship, who can provide technical continuity. Looking at the roster from the last European Championship, 11 out of 12 may not be available for the first window, but I am confident that with proper work and scouting, we can field competitive teams. We must have a recognizable style of play that allows us to compete at every level," he emphasized.
