Lewandowski: ‘I can't compete with Barca's young players’

Turin, 12 August (LaPresse) – Surrounded by players who could be his sons, Robert Lewandowski still has the same hunger he had 10 or 15 years ago, even at the age of 37. The Polish player is more focused than ever on keeping fit. ‘I'm still here to prove my best,’ he said in an interview with the BBC about his connection to Barcelona. The striker is entering his 22nd season as a professional footballer and has scored more than 700 goals in his career. Lamine Yamal was not even born when Lewandowski started, but despite being 19 years older than him, the striker believes he can learn from the younger players: ‘I realised that I can't fight with them, but I can help them and they can help me too. I'm learning a lot from the kids.’ The great rapport between Lewandowski and Yamal is evident and often results in jokes and banter that quickly go viral. ‘It's the first time in my life that I've seen something so special after 50 minutes,’ he confessed. ‘I couldn't believe it because I'd never seen a player like that at that age. I thought it was impossible at 15.’ If Lamine doesn't win the Ballon d'Or this year, Lewandowski believes it's only a matter of time: "Lamine Yamal's season has been incredible, but there's still a long way to go. If not this year, then maybe next year. Raphinha has also had an incredible season. We have players who could be favourites to win this award,‘ he adds. Looking back on that famous 2020 Ballon d'Or, which was left vacant due to the pandemic, he confesses: ’I was at the peak of my career; I had won everything with my club. I don't know why I haven't won it yet."
