Milan, 4 August (LaPresse) – Steve Pagliuca, minority owner of the Boston Celtics and owner of Atalanta, has stated that the potential deal to purchase the WNBA's Connecticut Sun for a record amount and relocate the team still requires approval from the league's Board of Governors.Pagliuca released a statement on Sunday via his social media group confirming that an offer had been made to purchase the team and move it out of the Mohegan Sun Arena, but said that WNBA approvals were still pending. According to sources cited by the AP, Pagliuca has reached an agreement to purchase the Connecticut Sun for a record $325 million and move the team to Boston. The franchise will not play in its new home until the 2027 season. Pagliuca would also contribute $100 million toward a new training centre in Boston for the team, the source said. ‘At the heart of our proposal is the opportunity for the Sun to play in larger arenas in New England,’ Pagliuca wrote. ‘We believe that our record-breaking offer and deep commitment to the growth of the WNBA in the region that is home to some of the nation's most passionate basketball fans will bring significant benefits to the league, the team and all of its fans,’ he added.
