Rome, 19 July (LaPresse) – The FIGC and its president Gabriele Gravina join the Italian Footballers' Association and the entire football world in mourning the passing of Sergio Campana, founder and honorary president of the AIC. Born in 1934 in Bassano del Grappa, Campana – nicknamed “the Lawyer” due to his law studies – divided his career between Lanerossi Vicenza and Bologna, before embarking on a managerial career with the establishment of the Italian Footballers' Association in 1968, which he would go on to lead in 1981 with the enactment of Law 91, regulating relations between clubs and professional athletes and recognising the status of footballers as employees. Campana led the AIC until 2011, gradually achieving other significant victories such as the recognition of image rights, the abolition of restrictions, social security, the creation of an end-of-career fund, simultaneous signing, collective agreements, unemployment benefits and a guarantee fund. ‘There are people who leave a deep mark with their existence, and Sergio Campana is certainly one of them,’ said FIGC president Gabriele Gravina.
