Rome, July 17 (LaPresse) – After earning promotion to Serie B with Pescara, Silvio Baldini is ready for a new challenge as head coach of the Italy U21 national team, which will begin its qualification campaign for the 2027 European Championship in September – a tournament that also offers a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The appointment of the Tuscan coach was officially announced today.
“We have entrusted the U21 national team to an excellent coach,” said FIGC president Gabriele Gravina. “He is a man of character and values. Baldini has the human and technical qualities to help the Azzurrini take a big step forward. Our main goal is to qualify for the Los Angeles Olympics, which is why, together with Maurizio Viscidi and Gianluigi Buffon, I felt it was necessary to choose an experienced leader capable of building a medium- to long-term project.”
“I’m happy and emotional,” Baldini said. “I thank President Gravina for the opportunity and the trust. I’m honored that he took an interest in my journey and thought of me for this role. Wearing the Azzurri shirt is a great pride, and I will try to convey this strong sense of identity and belonging to the players. From a technical point of view, I’m convinced we can do very well, but the only path I know to achieve results is through hard work – and I can’t wait to get started.”
