Tennis, ATP Ranking: No.1 Sinner extends lead over Alcaraz, Cobolli breaks into Top 20

Milan, July 14 (LaPresse) – An unforgettable edition of Wimbledon comes to an end. Unforgettable especially for Jannik Sinner, who became the first Italian in history to win the most prestigious tournament in the world. After seeing his name inscribed in the roll of honour and lifting the sport’s most coveted trophy to show the crowd from the Centre Court balcony, Sinner has solidified his place at the top of the ATP rankings. With his Wimbledon title, he now has 12,030 points, holding a 3,430-point lead over Carlos Alcaraz, who he beat in the final and who was last year’s champion.

But the battle is far from over. Between now and the end of the US Open, Sinner will have to defend 3,200 points (titles in Cincinnati and New York, quarterfinals in Canada). In the same period in 2024, Alcaraz has earned only 60 points, which could make the race for world number one even more heated.

Wimbledon was also unforgettable for Flavio Cobolli, who reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Despite losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic in his debut on Centre Court, the Roman player achieved his best Slam result and entered the Top 20 for the first time in his career.

Italy now boasts three players in the ATP Top 20:

Jannik Sinner (No. 1)

Lorenzo Musetti (No. 7), who despite a surprise first-round exit this year, had been a semifinalist last year

Flavio Cobolli, now the 13th Italian ever to enter the Top 20 since the introduction of computerised rankings.
