Doping, Bilbao player tests positive: ‘Substance taken unintentionally in medication for alopecia’

Milan, 11 July (LaPresse) – Athletic Bilbao player Yeray Álvarez has revealed that he has been temporarily suspended after testing positive for banned substances due to taking a drug to prevent hair loss caused by cancer treatment. The Spanish defender said in a social media post on Thursday that he had been informed ‘a few weeks ago’ that he had tested positive for a banned substance after Athletic's defeat by Manchester United in the Europa League semi-final in May. Álvarez, now 30, had to give up football for several months in 2017 to treat testicular cancer. He explained that, after his return to the pitch, he took medication to combat alopecia and that the cause of his positive doping test was the unintentional intake of a hair loss prevention drug containing a prohibited substance. The news (of my disqualification) was a hard blow, a blow I couldn't believe, given that I have never taken any banned substances in my life,‘ he said. He stated that his case is still in the early stages and that his suspension is provisional. Athletic said it ’deplores Yeray's human error and offers him its full support."
