Milan, 23 June (LaPresse) – Dries Mertens seems to have decided to retire from football. The revelation came as a surprise, perhaps unintentionally, in a video message addressed to his former Napoli teammate Marek Hamsik, who is organising a farewell match. ‘Great Marek Hamsik, I can't wait to play my last game with you. I've stopped playing, but just for you I'll lace up my boots one last time. For me, you will always be my captain and the best I've ever played with. Greetings from Naples, your home,’ Mertens explained in Italian in a video with the blue sea of Naples in the background. The Belgian striker played his last official match with Galatasaray on 30 May without confirming his retirement. In recent weeks, he was named an honorary citizen of Naples and on that occasion he also said he was thinking about retiring but had not yet made a final decision. Today, however, that decision seems to have been made.
