Golf, PGA Tour: Manassero challenges McIlroy and Aberg in Canada

Milan, June 4 (LaPresse) – Matteo Manassero returns to play on the PGA Tour and, from June 5 to 8, will be one of the main players at the RBC Canadian Open. In Caledon, Ontario, the Italian will face 16 of the world’s top 50 players, starting with number 2, Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman, who has already won three tournaments this year (including The Masters) — a feat matched only by Scottie Scheffler (the world ranking leader, absent from Canada after his win at The Memorial) — along with the Swedish player Ludvig Aberg, ranked eighth, will be the top favorites of the competition. McIlroy has already won this tournament twice: in 2019 and 2022 (the event was canceled in both 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19). Now he aims to emulate Tommy Armour, Sam Snead, and Lee Trevino, who each won it three times. This will be McIlroy’s fifth consecutive participation; he finished 9th in 2023 and 4th in 2024. The defending champion is Scottish Robert MacIntyre, who last year won by a single stroke over American Ben Griffin.
