Football: anti-Semitic post on social media, Gary Lineker leaves the BBC

Milan, 19 May (LaPresse/AP) – It's now official: former English striker Gary Lineker is leaving his role as a sports commentator at the BBC after being embroiled in controversy over an anti-Semitic post on his social media. Lineker himself made the announcement. Lineker, 64, the BBC's highest-paid presenter with an annual salary of around £1.3 million, was due to leave the flagship football programme ‘Match of the Day’ at the end of this season but was expected to remain with the BBC to cover other football programmes, including next year's Men's World Cup. However, on Monday, he announced that he will be leaving the BBC after the last episode of ‘Match of the Day’ next weekend, following controversy over his sharing of a post by the Palestine Lobby group, featuring an image of a mouse, entitled: ‘Zionism explained in two minutes’.
