Xabi Alonso will lead Real Madrid during the upcoming Club World Cup. According to Marca, the “Blancos” intend to immediately begin a new project with the former Bayer Leverkusen coach at the helm. There is no fear in entrusting such a prestigious tournament — scheduled for this summer in the United States, with a €150 million prize pool — to a young manager. The decision to go straight with Alonso reportedly took shape last week, when rumors circulated about a possible interim stint for Santiago Solari. However, Real Madrid’s reasoning was clear: it wouldn’t make sense to hire Alonso only to leave him at home planning the next season, while an inexperienced Solari takes charge of such a crucial tournament.
