Turin, April 23 (LaPresse) – Thomas Ceccon delivered another impressive performance at the Australian Open Championships, currently taking place in Brisbane, winning the 100m butterfly with a new personal best. The 24-year-old from Schio – who competes for Fiamme Oro and Leosport and is coached in Italy by Alberto Burlina at the federal center in Verona – clocked 51.26 seconds (previous PB: 51.38), with a blazing first 50m in 23.74. He came within 62 hundredths of the Italian record (50.64) set by Piero Codia in 2018 when he won gold at the European Championships in Glasgow.

The Venetian superstar – Olympic, world, and European champion in the 100m backstroke, and current world record holder in the event with 51.60 – also secured his fourth qualifying time for the World Championships in Singapore. On Monday, he had already qualified in the 200m backstroke, setting a new Italian record of 1:55.71, beating the 1:56.29 mark set by Matteo Restivo on August 8, 2018, also in Glasgow, for a European bronze. Previously, Ceccon also achieved the qualifying time in the 100m backstroke with 52.84 at the National Preparation Meet, where he also swam 48.18 in the 100m freestyle, earning a spot on Italy’s 4x100m relay team, European champion, world silver medalist, and Olympic bronze medalist.
