Milan, 18 April (LaPresse) – With Lazio's exit from the Europa League on penalties at the hands of Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, Italy's goal of having five teams in the Champions League next season has finally faded. According to the updated rankings published this morning on the UEFA website, England and Spain will each have an extra place in Europe's richest and most important competition. The English still have four clubs out of seven still in the running in the three competitions and lead the season rankings with 26,821 points. Spain follows with three clubs out of seven still in contention and a coefficient of 23,250. Italy is third with two clubs out of eight still in the running and a score of 21,187. Therefore, even if Inter and Fiorentina were to win the Champions League and the Conference League, Italy would not be able to overtake Spain. There is still a bitter taste in the mouth after the many exits of Italian teams, especially in the Champions League against teams that were well within their reach. Juventus, Milan and Atalanta were eliminated in the play-offs by the not-so-irresistible PSV, Feyenoord and Bruges, who, not surprisingly, were literally overwhelmed by their respective opponents in the next round.
