The former Roma coach arrived at Southampton ‘at a difficult time and was given the task of trying to improve a team in a difficult situation. Unfortunately, we have not seen the performances progress as we had hoped, but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work in trying to keep us up. With relegation to the Championship now confirmed, we feel it is important to give the fans, players and staff some clarity about the future as we head into a very important summer,’ read a statement from the club. ‘In the meantime, Simon Rusk has agreed to take charge of the team as interim manager for the remaining seven games of this season and will be assisted by Adam Lallana,’ it added.
