Rome, 15 Mar. (LaPresse) – The historic Azteca stadium, the stage of the legendary Mexico 1970 semi-final Italy-Germany 4-3 and the quarter-final between Argentina and England that went down in history for Diego Armando Maradona's ‘hand of God’ (which scored two memorable goals against the English), has changed its name. From Friday it has taken the name of a bank ready to finance the modernisation necessary for the stadium to host the 2026 World Cup. ‘From today the Cathedral of world football will be called Estadio Banorte’, announced a statement from Banco Banorte, with 125 years of history, and Grupo Ollamani, owner of the stadium. The financing period is 12 years, the company explained in a brief statement. In the document, both Mexican entities announced ‘a long-term partnership that includes 2.1 billion pesos (approximately 105.7 million dollars) in funding for the renovation of the stadium, which will make it one of the best in the world and offer an extraordinary concert experience in Mexico’. Inaugurated in 1966, the Azteca Stadium has been undergoing renovations since 2024 to meet FIFA requirements and host the 2026 World Cup, for the third time in history.
