Rome, 29 May (LaPresse) – “Italy believes that the epidemiological situation in Central Africa linked to the recent outbreak of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus (BVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda requires the utmost attention”. This is stated in a note from Palazzo Chigi, which reports that “for this reason, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has sent a letter to the current EU President Nikos Christodoulides, the President of the European Council Antonio Costa and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The aim is to call for, whilst respecting national prerogatives regarding health protection, enhanced coordination of border surveillance through common rules for managing direct and indirect arrivals from the affected areas”. The Prime Minister, the statement continues, “has proposed adding the issue of border management to the agenda of the European Council meeting on 18–19 June 2026. Ahead of this meeting, the Italian Government has requested that the coordination in question be brought forward to a videoconference of Health Ministers as early as next week and to the EPSCO Council on 16 June to define operational priorities”.
