Rome, 7 May (LaPresse) – ‘I believe that Trump is jealous, envious, of the fact that there is a US citizen in the world who is the Pope – not only more authoritative, but also more loved, and far more credible.’ Gianfranco Fini made these remarks on ‘Ping Pong’ on Rai Radio1, commenting on US President Donald Trump’s attacks on Pope Leo XIV. “Giorgia Meloni, who is a realistic, practical woman, has acknowledged that the relationship with the United States is one that cannot and must not be broken unilaterally by Europe. The risk is that it will be severed, in NATO terms, by the United States,‘ added the former leader of Alleanza Nazionale, responding to a question about the meeting between Marco Rubio and Giorgia Meloni and the tensions between Donald Trump and the Italian government. ’The Italy-US relationship is a historic, long-standing one that benefits both sides. Everyone in Europe thinks so. The problem is the US under the Trump presidency. These are two elements that, when viewed from a broader perspective, do not align. Today we have President Trump, who is, in some respects, a unique and, I hope, unrepeatable president, because he surrounds himself with ‘yes men’ and sometimes makes decisions that seem incomprehensible.”
