Milan, 4 May (LaPresse) – “Whoever drafted that provision did so with the aim of balancing the significant value of investigative tools with the need to safeguard citizens’ rights. Nevertheless, this is a very important report, which deserves thorough investigation.” These were the words of Matteo Piantedosi, Minister of the Interior, speaking on the sidelines of the presentation of the book ‘Dalla parte delle divise’ (On the side of the uniform), co-authored with journalist Annalisa Chirico, at the Rizzoli bookshop in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, where Senate President Ignazio La Russa was also present. He was responding to the letter in which National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Giovanni Melillo wrote to the government and parliament, warning that the new restrictions on wiretapping are hampering investigations. Piantedosi dismissed the warning as serious and announced that he would meet Melillo tomorrow in Naples, where the meeting had already been scheduled for other reasons, taking the opportunity to address this issue as well. He will then discuss it with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice. “We are working on the matter: we will meet and carry out an analysis together with representatives of the police forces,” explained Piantedosi. “We will therefore obtain an objective assessment,” concluded the minister.
