Migration, Meloni: "Uncontrolled flows affect the quality of democracies"

Yerevan (Armenia), May 4 (LaPresse) – “Uncontrolled migration flows put pressure on citizens’ security and, when exploited as a hybrid threat, also on the stability of states. But that’s not all. They also affect the economy, putting pressure on public resources and influencing the labour market. They reduce competitiveness, increase uncertainty and fuel social tensions. They are also linked to energy, because we must face the fact that many flows come from unstable regions that are crucial for our energy supplies. In the end, all this affects the quality of our democracies. When citizens perceive that major challenges are not effectively managed, they lose trust in institutions. And when trust erodes, people become more vulnerable to manipulation, including the malicious use of artificial intelligence. So it is not just about migration: it is migration, it is economy, it is democracy, it is competitiveness, it is energy, it is security.” This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaking at the EPC summit in Yerevan during the discussion on how “to maintain European unity and coherence in times of multiple crises,” moderated by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, with the participation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
