Iran, Renzi: “I think the worst of Trump but Sánchez’s position is populism”

Rome, Mar. 7 (LaPresse) – Matteo Renzi, leader of Italia Viva and former prime minister of Italy, commented on the ongoing crisis involving Iran and the international response. Interviewed by El País, Renzi said he thinks “the worst possible things about Donald Trump, the ICE, and tariffs,” but added that this does not justify what he described as the populist stance taken by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Renzi argued that when a missile from groups like Hezbollah reaches Europe or Iranian forces attack Western allies, it is not possible to simply turn away and claim neutrality. He said that although he holds strong criticisms of Trump, he would always side with the United States against the Ayatollah regime in Tehran. Renzi also stressed that Europe should not ignore actions in the Middle East and that leadership cannot be guided by what he termed populism.
