We are not facing a multilateral body born within the UN framework or founded on a treaty between states on equal terms. This is an initiative promoted and claimed by Donald Trump as his own political creation, with governance built around his leadership and outside the ordinary framework of international law," said Angelo Bonelli, AVS deputy and co-spokesperson of Europa Verde.
"All this while over 70,000 deaths have been counted in Gaza since October 7, 2023, and the territory is devastated. Talking about a ‘reconstruction governance’ within a personalistic, US-driven structure risks turning a humanitarian tragedy into a political, strategic, and economic operation," he added. "There is open talk of real estate speculation plans, resorts, casinos, and large private investments on the ruins of an exhausted population. This is not a peace process: it is turning reconstruction into a business, with the risk that Gaza becomes an economic conquest rather than a place of justice and self-determination. It is serious that Parliament is being involved only now, after announcements and backtracking. It is extremely serious that a choice touching Article 11 of the Constitution is being handled through press releases and tactical adjustments. Italy must be part of true multilateralism, not personalistic political structures. Peace cannot be a private creation of a leader, nor can it be born on the ruins of tens of thousands of deaths," Bonelli concluded.
