Rome, 27 Jan. (LaPresse) – "On this day, we are here to remember the countless innocent victims – six million people – suffocated in gas chambers, slaughtered by firing squads, who perished from mistreatment and starvation within the gloomy walls of the ghettos: the elderly, young people, women, men, children, newborns. Mostly Jews, Roma and Sinti, homosexuals, political dissidents, members of religious minorities, disabled people, and the mentally ill. All defined as belonging to categories unworthy of life. As Italians, we recall with anguish the discrimination, persecution, deportation and death of our Jewish fellow citizens, betrayed by the racial laws imposed by fascism and by many of its followers who sold out to the Nazi executioners, with the complicity of the monarchy, of many who considered themselves intellectuals, and of part of the population'. These were the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, during the Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony at the Quirinale. “We cannot limit ourselves to this sentiment, however sincere and appropriate it may be: it would be a missed opportunity. It would be a mistake,” added the Head of State.
