Rome, Dec 23 (LaPresse) – “During events and military ceremonies of institutional significance, when the Italian national anthem is sung, the final ‘yes’ must not be pronounced.” This is the instruction issued by the Defense General Staff, effective from December 2, 2025.
In practice, ceremonies now return to the original version of the anthem written by Goffredo Mameli, omitting the final “yes” that had been introduced during the presidency of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. The decision—anticipated by Il Fatto Quotidiano—was made jointly by the Quirinale and Palazzo Chigi and communicated by the Defense General Staff to the various branches of the armed forces.
The circular refers to the Presidential Decree of March 14, 2025, which regulates how the anthem must be performed. It states that “during ceremonies featuring a war or institutional flag, or the presence of the President of the Republic, as well as on national holidays both in Italy and abroad, the National Anthem, without the introductory section, shall be performed by repeating twice in succession the first two quatrains and twice the refrain from the original text by Goffredo Mameli, as set out in Michele Novaro’s original score.”
