Rome, 22 December (LaPresse) – "There are no words to describe this manoeuvre. After raising the retirement age for 96 per cent of workers, they are now attacking the judiciary, which enforces compliance with Article 36 of the Constitution. Namely, that the wages of those who work must be fair and decent. The Pogliese amendment – which we managed to block six months ago – is being included in the budget law without any possibility of discussion. It is a real coup: employers who have not paid fair wages to workers will not be obliged to pay arrears, as many court rulings have determined. This is a very serious matter, which shows once again that the government is not only doing nothing to combat poor working conditions, but is actually taking measures to ensure that they remain poor. We are calling for it to be scrapped, not least because it is a regulatory provision that has nothing to do with the state budget. In the face of such pettiness, it is becoming increasingly urgent to reopen the debate on the legal minimum wage. So says PD secretary Elly Schlein.
