UN, Mattarella: ‘An indispensable cornerstone, it is up to states to make it effective’

Rome, 14 Dec. (LaPresse) – "On the 70th anniversary of its accession, Italy welcomes the United Nations as the indispensable cornerstone of an international order based on respect for the law and authoritative multilateral institutions. Today, as then, it is up to the member states to make it effective and capable of achieving its lofty goals, for the benefit of every human being. The commitment of all will enable it to establish itself as the shared heritage of all humanity." Thus spoke the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. ‘Seventy years ago, on 14 December 1955, the Italian Republic was admitted to the United Nations, the most important of modern international organisations, which arose from the ashes of the Second World War with the declared aim of “saving future generations from the scourge of war”,’ added the Head of State. . "It took ten years after the end of the war to achieve this result, made possible by the wisdom of the founding fathers who, in drafting Article 11 of our Constitution, conferred constitutional value on multilateral cooperation, allowing, “on an equal footing with other States, the limitations of sovereignty necessary for an order that ensures peace and justice among Nations”. Since then, Italy has responsibly played its role as an active member of the international community, making participation in the United Nations a cornerstone of its foreign policy, on a par with European integration and the Atlantic Alliance'. “Italy hosts important offices and facilities of UN agencies on its territory, participates in peacekeeping operations and is a champion of fundamental universal campaigns for civilisation, starting with the moratorium on the death penalty”.
