Rome, Nov. 27 (LaPresse) – "The fourth meeting of the steering committee for prison construction, which now takes place on a regular basis, was held at Palazzo Chigi. Promoted by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, it was attended by the Undersecretary to the Prime Minister Alfredo Mantovano, Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, Undersecretaries for Justice Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove and Andrea Ostellari, Special Commissioner for Prison Construction Marco Doglio, representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), Invitalia, and the interregional superintendents of public works." This is according to a statement from Palazzo Chigi. “The 2025-2027 prison construction program,” the statement continues, "confirms the creation of 10,692 new prison places, broken down as follows: 2,636 places by the Department of Prison Administration (DAP), 73 by the Department of Juvenile Justice (DGMC), 3,314 by the MIT, and 4,669 by the Special Commissioner. The schedule calls for the opening of 864 places in 2025, 5,754 in 2026, and 4,074 in 2027, for a total of 10,692 new places made available over the three-year period. Since the approval of the Prison Building Plan by the Council of Ministers on July 22, all tenders under the jurisdiction of the Special Commissioner for the recovery of over 4,000 prison places have been published. For the entire 2022-2027 legislative period, the overall target is set at 11,194 prison places, including both those already completed by October 2022 and those to be completed by 2027. The planned interventions—which include routine and extraordinary maintenance, new construction, and expansions—will affect almost all of the DAP's prisons (190) and juvenile detention centers (17), at a total cost of over €900 million over the three-year period.
