Rome, Nov. 12 (LaPresse) – “Giorgia Meloni is mocking mayors. She claims that the 2026 budget law is the first without cuts, forgetting that her previous budgets have already taken away 10.7 billion euros from local authorities between current expenditure and investments, including more than 800 million less in 2026, 1.2 billion in 2027, and 1.4 billion in 2028. Her calculator seems to be broken again. Not to mention that the government removed the fund for rent and arrears set up by previous administrations, hasn’t allocated a single euro in the budget for housing and transport, meaning mayors will be forced to raise fees or cut services. Instead of self-congratulating, the prime minister should publicly apologize and start genuinely reversing this disastrous course. This deadly increase in cuts seriously weakens the ability of municipalities, provinces, and metropolitan cities to provide services and carry out essential public works.” So said PD secretary Elly Schlein.
