Rome, 2 November (LaPresse) – "The reform is dangerous from several points of view. It removes the public prosecutor from the jurisdiction, equating him with a private party. The mission of the public prosecutor is not to solve a case at all costs, but to seek the truth, even investigating in favour of the suspect, precisely because, unlike other parties to the proceedings, he does not have to protect partisan interests. As I have said many times, transfers of function are very limited today and when they do occur, they involve a change of region. Furthermore, there is no flattening of judges to prosecutors, otherwise the high number of acquittals cannot be explained. Therefore, the logical objective of this reform, there being no others, is to subsequently subject the public prosecutor to the executive power, with all due respect to the protection of citizens." This is according to the public prosecutor of Naples, Nicola Gratteri, interviewed by La Repubblica. “I have always been independent,” he adds. “I have never been tied to any political factions. It's not in my DNA. That doesn't mean that those who think differently from me are wrong. In this case, however, faced with the serious danger of compromising the principles of autonomy and independence of the judiciary, we must march together.”
