Rome, 22 October (LaPresse) – ‘The secretary of the main opposition party,’ Elly Schlein, "said that freedom and democracy are at risk in Italy because of a far-right government, and subtly linked this to the attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. These are very serious statements, not because the problem is criticising the government abroad, but because this means throwing mud and casting shadows on Italy and the quality of its democracy. These are attempts to throw mud and cast shadows on Italy, for which Italy risks paying the price, while we are all paid to represent this nation in the best possible way." This was the response of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the M5S during her reply in the Chamber of Deputies as part of the debate on her statements ahead of the European Council. “You know very well that it is not true that freedom and democracy are at risk in Italy, so why are you saying it? It will not help you to govern a nation that is currently thriving from the ruins,” concluded the Prime Minister.
