Milan, Sept. 24 (LaPresse) – “I’m both incredulous and happy. The outcome of this vote shows that many in the EU understand that the problem lies with Orbán’s Hungary, not with my trial. And I want to reiterate that I’m ready to be judged in Italy, by an impartial court that respects the rule of law. Several colleagues from the center-right have also shown their solidarity with me over the past few days. I prefer not to name names, but it was a relief,” said Avs MEP Ilaria Salis in an interview with Corriere della Sera, following the vote by the JURI Committee of the European Parliament, which confirmed her immunity and rejected Hungary’s request to lift it.
“I found out about the result while I was in my office with some of my staff,” Salis recounted. “Then I immediately called my father, Roberto. He was overjoyed. But we know this matter is not over yet.”
Asked whether she had spoken with members of the EPP—whose votes were decisive—she replied: “Of course, there’s daily work and dialogue. But some of these relationships are personal, and I prefer to keep them private. That meant a lot to me, because the support I received during these tense weeks didn’t just come from the progressive side.”
