Rome, 14 September (LaPresse) – "In recent years, fears have grown that the world is heading down a dangerous precipice, driven by a widespread logic of abuse of power and increasingly marked by devastating conflicts. Every day, many thousands of civilian victims pay an intolerable price in blood and destruction. Faced with such concerns, women and men of good will feel an urgent need for peace and justice. Every continent looks with keen hope to your pressing appeals for a ceasefire and a return to dialogue, for the common good of all peoples." These are the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his message of good wishes sent to Pope Leo XIV, who today celebrates his 70th birthday. "Since the beginning of your high magisterium, you have delivered to the entire international community and to individual consciences a strong call for that “unarmed and disarming peace” that opens hearts. And you have reminded us, with St Augustine, that “we are the times”. It is up to all of us – and in particular to those who hold public office – to commit ourselves to improving circumstances, reopening horizons of dialogue, justice and concrete protection of the dignity of every person," added the Head of State.
