EU, Picierno: ‘Putin and despots threaten us, more Europe to defend democracies’

Milan, 14 September (LaPresse) – ‘The world in which peaceful international relations prevailed, in which our security was guaranteed by the Americans, we did business with the Chinese and bought energy from the Russians, simply no longer exists. We have become accustomed to taking things for granted that are no longer a given.’ This was stated in an interview with Corriere della Sera by Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament, who, when asked whether Putin is currently the enemy of the Union, replied: ‘Absolutely yes, Putin himself says so.’ For Picierno, ‘the only possible response is more Europe, provided that it knows how to read what is happening around it and knows how to give convincing answers. We must choose to be a global democratic power.’
