End of life, Cucchi (Avs): ‘Excluding the National Health Service is unconstitutional’

Rome, 11 September (LaPresse) – "The right wing does not want Italy to have a law on end of life under any circumstances. It does not want a law that meets the needs of the sick, but above all, it does not want the National Health Service to be used to help and alleviate the suffering of those with incurable diseases. Yet only the NHS is able to guarantee universal, equitable and equal services throughout the country. Preventing sick people from using the National Health Service is unconstitutional and risks privatising end-of-life practices'. This is according to Ilaria Cucchi, senator for the Green and Left Alliance. “The right wing is wrong because only the NHS guarantees equal treatment, dignity for the sick and no differences based on individual economic means,” continues Cucchi. AVS is in favour of giving Italians the opportunity to decide how to live with dignity until the very end and not to exclude the National Health Service. Italians have the sacrosanct right to decide. Freedom of choice is a right, not a concession from the right,' concludes Cucchi.
